Are there any differences between women's and men's basketball uniforms?

Slightly, but not like there used to be. Back when the sport was first invented by Dr. Frank Naismith, women used to play basketball in long skirts and long-sleeved blouses. Men wore long wool pants and short-sleeved shirts. Time and evolving trends changed the uniform, and eventually men and women began to wear sleeveless shirts and shorts. Today, the only minor design difference is that a woman's sleeveless jersey has smaller arm openings and wider straps.

When and how did knee-length basketball shorts become popular?

Blame it on legendary basketball player Michael Jordan! He revolutionized the look of basketball shorts in the mid-to-late 1980s. Prior to the new trend, basketball shorts were fairly short and form-fitting. As the story goes, the star player got tired of tugging on his not-so-roomy traditional basketball shorts during games. He asked to have a wider, longer pair specially made for him, and team members liked them. Eventually the redesigned shorts were made for the whole team, and before long college basketball players across the country, and even the fashion industry, caught on to a lasting new trend.

How have basketball uniforms changed over the years?

The basketball uniform evolved with the changing trends. When basketball was invented, everyday street clothes were worn - there were no uniforms yet. Men wore baggy wool trousers and short-sleeved shirts, socks and street shoes. Women wore long skirts with blouses and scarves, socks and shoes. When basketball became recognized as a sport in the 1920s, men's basketball uniforms consisted of a pair of medium-length trunks and a sleeveless jersey. Eventually, jerseys made from stretchy breathable wool were designed to identify teams and reflect team spirit. Ladies' jerseys fastened at the crotch to keep them tucked in, and women had to wear knee pads. The invention of synthetic fabrics revolutionized basketball uniforms in the 1930s, and by the 1940s, polyester-nylon shorts and tanks became the norm. The uniform continued to transform in keeping with the changing fashion trends. Shorts became shorter and snugger in the 1970s and 1980s, returning to the longer, baggier shorts that remain the norm today.
